TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Winter paving to close lanes on NE 28th Avenue

from NE Glisan Street to NE Broadway through Dec. 1st

(November 17, 2014)  – The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that street improvements will require lane closures on NE 28th Avenue from NE Glisan Street to NE Broadway from Tuesday, November 18 through Monday, December 1st, 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. each weekday. This project may also include some weekend work.

The lane closures will allow crews to grind 1.39 lane miles of pavement in preparation for paving at a later date.

PBOT street improvement crews work through the winter, adjusting tasks based on weather conditions. During the winter season, PBOT street improvement crews can grind down old asphalt and prepare street surfaces for paving even in cold and rainy conditions. They will return to the street to complete paving when dry conditions prevail.

Streets with ground down surfaces are open for travel. Lane closures are only in effect during project hours.

During the project, access will be maintained for businesses and residents. The public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible.

This work is weather-dependent and the schedule may change.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

One lane of East Burnside Street to close next week for street repairs

between NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and NE Grand Avenue

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that street improvements require the closure of the right eastbound lane and bus stop on E. Burnside Street between NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and NE Grand Avenue through Monday, November 24, 2014.

The lane closure will be in effect all hours and all days. The lane closure is necessary to allow crews to repair the failed road base and stabilize the foundation of the road to prevent potholes and other surface distresses.

A temporary bus stop will be located at NE 6th Avenue and NE Grand Avenue.

The public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel cautiously, observe all work zone signage, and use alternate routes if possible.

This work is weather-dependent and the schedule may change.

Changes Are Coming to NE Broadway – Help Shape the Future of Your Business District!

Empty space and parking lots are being transformed into major high-density projects, infill apartment buildings and new commercial space. Familiar businesses leave and new ones arrive. Traffic is busier, parking is getting tighter, there are more bikes, and crossing streets remains a challenge.

Come to a community conversation exploring today’s NE Broadway Business District and what the future may hold for local residents and businesses. The NE Broadway Business Association (NEBBA) and Venture Portland are sponsoring an eye-opening evening of opinion from a panel of three experts, plus an opportunity for you to ask questions and offer feedback on your vision for the NE Broadway business district.

When: Wednesday Nov. 12, 6:30-8:30pm
Where: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1624 NE Hancock
(enter at door on Hancock)

Our Expert Panel will present:

•  Current customer demographics and how NE Broadway compares to other Portland business districts for leasing rates, occupancy and other trends.

•  How the Corridor is divided into different nodes by development style and business type, plus thoughts on how to create a cohesive identity for the business district.

•  Coming changes for the NE Broadway/Weidler Corridor, the impact on businesses and area residents, and how to make the district more economically competitive.

•  Ideas for improving the business mix, streetscape continuity, and customer-friendly access given the reality of high traffic volume and major multi-lane streets.

•  How businesses can better attract customers and generate more revenue with great storefront design that doesn’t have to be expensive.

Our Panel:
Tyler Bump, Economic Planner, Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability
Seanette McCorkill, Frontdoor Back
Michele Reeves, Civilis Consultants

We hope you can come help shape the future of NE Broadway on November 12th.

Our Fall General Meeting is just around the corner... hopefully we'll see you there! Bring your neighbors and join us at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. Below is the meeting agenda, so you get a sneak peak at the evening:
Publication Date: November 05, 2014

Meeting Day, Date & Time: Thursday, November 13, 2014, 7:00PM-8:30 PM

1.        Welcome, identification of SGNA Board of Directors and introductions of neighbors and visitors.

2.        A thank you to the Reverend Stephen V. Schneider, Rector and to Grace Memorial Episcopal Church.

3.        Election of Members to the Board of Directors.

4.        Finance Committee Report - A year's end financial report.

5.        Land Use Transportation Committee (LUTC) - a report on the last six months. A lot has been accomplished and we have been recognized for our work and we will all be benefitting from the addition of many new neighbors.

6.        Events Committee  - A report on a very active year - nearly one event every other month.

7.        Communications Committee - a report on our new website. Comments on developing efforts.

8.        Safety & Livability Committee - Our challenges, recent events (a report from the Portland Police, if circumstances allow our Response Team Member to be present) - a call to action.

9.        Feature Presentation - HealthCare for All Oregon is a grassroots coalition of over 100 organizations that are determined to create a better way of financing health care for every person who lives or works in Oregon. A number of neighbors have committed their time and efforts to this organization and have asked for an opportunity to present their vision. (http://hcao.org)

10.     Feature Presentation - The Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (http://www.portlandoregon.gov/pbem/) has organized a neighborhood emergency team training program. One of their representatives will make a case for training and share a presentation on how to become involved. Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs) are Portland residents trained by PBEM and Portland Fire & Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance within their own neighborhoods. NET members are trained to save lives and property until professional responders can arrive. These volunteers are specially trained to help others without putting themselves in harm’s way. NET members are: Prepared to be self-sufficient for one week during any emergency. Able to provide emergency assistance to their family and immediate neighbors. Able to work within an emergency response team to save lives and property in their neighborhood.  Able to guide untrained volunteers who want to help others during a disaster.

11.     Feature Presentation - Our Board of Directors member John Frewing has committed himself to the successful completion of a recent inventory of the trees of Sullivan's Gulch. A representative from Portland Urban Forestry, a division of Portland Parks and Recreation will present a summary of this effort. We have some remarkable and unique specimens within our boundaries. We are grateful for the efforts of John Frewing and all of the volunteers who worked on this project. They have produced a valuable accounting of precious resources.

12.     A Thank You and Concluding Remarks

Picture
Our friends and newest neighbors, New Seasons Market, are throwing a Grand Opening celebration on November 12th. The entire neighborhood has been watching as the many parts of this process have developed over several months and it's truly exciting that its now time to celebrate, shop and welcome them to the area! Doors open at 7am and the Grand Opening ceremony begins at 10am.

Here's a quick note about the new store from New Seasons, themselves:

Our Grant Park store brings a new meaning to “being part of the community.” It’s our first store in an urban-friendly, multi-use building, situated beneath 213 residential apartments. And whether you’re a neighbor, an Eastside pedestrian or a busy Broadway commuter, we’re ready for you. Our fifteenth store has organic favorites plus daily staples, over 4,000 non-GMO verified items, a renowned bulk section, and the best local meat and produce in the Northwest—all closer to home than ever.
  • Unique offerings like fresh raw juice, a craft beer growler station, and Portland’s very first toast bar, where our organic artisan breads can truly shine.
  • Grab a hearty lunch at our burrito bar—or have us custom-make a wok or ramen bowl for you.
  • Artwork in the garage from local muralist Brett Superstar, and intricate fused-glass panels by Portland sculptor Ivan McClean in the deli seating area.
  • Underground parking available with two entrances: on Northeast Broadway or Northeast Weidler Streets—just look for the “P” sign.

PBOT Advisory

NEWS ADVISORY:

As clocks turn back, PBOT urges additional visibility, care while traveling;
crosswalk enforcement action slated to promote pedestrian safety

(October 29, 2014) – The Portland Bureau of Transportation and Portland Police Bureau advise the traveling public that a crosswalk enforcement action is scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. to raise awareness of pedestrian safety and Oregon traffic laws.

Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 2nd, which means the clock turns back one hour and darkness arrives earlier in the afternoon.  The City is urging all travelers to be visible and look out for each other, especially as people adjust to the time switch and low light conditions of late fall and winter.

Drivers can do their part by driving at or below the posted speed and continuously scanning the environment for pedestrians and people on bicycles and being ready to stop as needed.

Bicyclists, by state law, must have a white front light and rear red reflector or red light at a minimum.

Pedestrians are encouraged to be more visible by wearing retro-reflective wear, carrying a flashlight or blinking strobe, and investing in bright and contrasting outerwear.
