April 19th - Get Involved With Your Neighbors!

On April 19th, there will be two nature-focused events in the Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood. Sign up for one or both of them here.

Volunteer Corps: Garden Tending

Join the Sullivan's Gulch Volunteer Corps behind the Broadway Grill (17th & Weidler) at 10am to help the organization, foundseed, to prepare their garden beds for Spring! Bring gloves and weather-appropriate clothing. Come prepared to dig, shovel, weed, meet neighbors, snack, and/or learn about foundseed's history with guerilla gardening! Sign up here.

Tree Team: Flowering Trees Walk

Spring is coming, and our neighborhood trees are starting to bud and flower. Our guided tree walks are a special opportunity to learn about these towering giants that give us shade, peace, and more. Join us at 1pm for our first Tree walk, led by Tree Team member and arborist Biz Miller. Gulch Tree Walks are starting up

Spring is coming, and our neighborhood trees are starting to bud and flower. You are invited to join our guided Gulch Tree Walks each season to witness our trees as they blossom, fruit, share their yield, and benefit our lives. The first themed tree walk is coming up!

  • Flowering Trees, April 19, 1–2:30 p.m., led by Tree Team member and arborist Biz Miller. (Sign-up details will be distributed in early April. Limit 15.)

Future themed Gulch Tree Walks:

  • Benefits of Trees (July, details TBD)

  • Fall Colors (September Gulch-o-Rama)

  • Bounty of Trees (October, details TBD)

Our guided tree walks are a special opportunity to learn about these towering giants that give us shade, peace, and more. Did you know that only a handful of Portland neighborhoods has a Tree Team?

Littleleaf Linden Tree

The Linden tree is the most populous street tree in our neighborhood. This article focuses on the Littleleaf Linden, native to Europe. They can grow 50-70 ft. tall and wide. See if you can find one! I use an App called “Picture This” to help me ID trees. Urban Forestry recommends creating greater diversity of tree species in our neighborhoods. This is a goal for the Gulch as well.

Here are some of the good features of this tree:

  • Shade
  • Tolerance for city conditions (including pollution)
  • Non-toxic to humans and pets
  • Heart shaped leaves (pale yellow clusters) that give Fall color (yellow-green to yellow-brown)
  • Disease resistant
  • Its fine-grained wood is sought out by carvers and furniture makers
  • A nectar source for bees
  • The fragrant flowers can produce a richly flavored honey prized by bee keeping communities
  • Its leaves and flowers can wave beautifully in the wind.


Possible challenging features:

  • Sensitive to road salt
  • Can be affected by Japanese beetles and aphids
  • Litter from messy flowers and seeds
  • Wrong use of insecticides can contribute to bumble bee deaths
