The house where Weidler turns at NE 24th was crashed into at 11:15 pm on Christmas eve. The car, clearly going faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit, struck the natural gas meter which caught on fire, burning a substantial part of the house before Portland Fire Dept. was able to put it out.
News reports said it's not the first time the house has been hit, but certainly the worst. Portland Fire & Rescue has responded to 6 crashes in the past 2 years. Gulch residents have been asking the city for improvements to this intersection for years. SGNA discussed the situation at its January meeting.
Complicating a simple solution to prevent future crashes is the city's classification of that portion of Weidler as an emergency route, which limits the kinds of traffic calming options the PBOT can implement. For now there is a speed readout on Weidler and new reflective signs at the intersection. PBOT is studying more options.
