NEWS RELEASE:

Leaf Day Pickup Service begins on Sunday, Nov. 2, continues through December 17

to collect and compost leaves in neighborhoods with mature trees

(October 28, 2014) - The City of Portland’s annual Leaf Day Pickup Service begins on Sunday, November 2, and extends through December 17, 2014 offering a one- or two-day leaf collection and composting service in neighborhoods with mature trees.

In addition, the Portland Bureau of Transportation urges all residents to keep streets and storm drains clear of leaves in the coming weeks to prevent slippery conditions and street flooding, which can occur when storm grates become clogged or when leaves are left in the street.   The Transportation Bureau asks residents to sweep up leaves as they fall and place them in yard debris roll carts for collection and composting.

The city’s leaf pickup service is provided to 30 designated leaf removal districts in neighborhoods whose high concentration of street trees need a higher level of service than residents’ and the city’s regular street cleaning operation can provide.

The Transportation Bureau composts all leaves that are picked up through the program at its Sunderland Recycling Facility.   Last year, the Leaf Day service collected 12,681 cubic yards of leaves, turning them into 2,536 cubic yards of compost and zero waste.  One cubic yard is roughly the amount that can fill a small pickup truck.

Residents in leaf districts have received letters and brochures notifying them of the service, which typically costs $15 for one Leaf Day and $30 for two.   The letters also show how to opt out of the service for residents who wish to remove leaves themselves.  The last day for opting out is November 1.  People may verify their dates of service and find other information at www.Portlandoregon.gov/leafday.  Residents with questions may call 503-865-LEAF (5323).

PBOT News Advisory: Pick Up & Compost Autumn Leaves

News Advisory:

City advises residents to pick up and compost autumn leaves; keep streets safe and free of slippery conditions.

(October 21, 2014) –   It’s time to bring out the rakes.  With heavy rain and gusty winds predicted for late tonight and early Wednesday, the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation is asking Portlanders to keep streets and storm drains clear of fallen leaves.

Portland’s urban forest brings great beauty and benefits – from clean air and water to increased property values and free shade. But with trees come leaves – and when they fall in an urban environment, it's necessary to clean them up.

From now through mid-December, removing leaves from our streets is critical because letting them stay on the street can clog storm drains, flood intersections and make streets slippery. The City has 58,000 storm drains and asks the public to help in keeping them clear.

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation is offering these storm tips:
  • Simply sweep leaves up and place them in your yard debris roll cart for easy pickup.
  • Please do not sweep leaves into the street- that creates a hazard for travelers as leaves get smashed and create a slick surface
  • If a storm drain floods and clearing the surface doesn’t work, call the Transportation Bureau’s dispatch line 24/7 at 503-823-1700. We will send a crew to clear the storm drain.
  • For residents near Fanno Creek and Johnson Creek, the Transportation Bureau has stocked two locations with sand and bags for winter weather.  Those locations are at Gabriel Park and Lents Park and are self-service.
  • The City’s Leaf Day Pickup Service, which offers a one or two day pickup service in neighborhoods with a heavy concentration of street trees, begins November 2 and runs through December 17. The Leaf Day schedule and additional information may be found at  www.portlandoregon.gov/leafday
