July 08 SGNA Minutes

Present: Guy Kyle, Meara McLaughlin, Pam Pfiffner, Lauren Golden, Dan Lerch –Walters, John Taylor, Adam Capage, Craig Nyschins, Clayton Rice, Joyce Keeley, and Lee Perlman (from the Hollywood Star.)  Minutes submitted by Gretchen Milhaupt

Lauren gave a three pronged report on land use issues:

  1. Brad Perkins, a local real estate developer called Lauren with his news of wanting to move four houses from the corner of 21st and Multnomah in order to build a 225 unit complex 6 stories high.  He is asking for our community input about this project.
  2. The property owners on NE Weidler in front of the  Hollywood Fred Meyer store are seeking a zoning change from residential to commercial.  It is understood that the houses will stand but have a commercial use.
  3. There are questions about the new proposal for the Holladay Park Plaza expansion plans and a meeting was held in Randy Leonards’s office.  BDS says their design is in compliance, but a larger print out of the design will be available July 17th for further review.  Lauren  would like others from SGNA to meet once to review the design and  discuss issues before she goes to city hall.  Harrison, Matt Sipes and Will Elder were suggested as good candidates to assist Lauren.  (All of this was a bit over my head, so that’s the most I can say about it-GM.)

The main order of business was to brainstorm about Gulch-O-Rama, and Lauren was well prepared to facilitate this part of the meeting.

At first, Lauren had everyone write down 6 “visions” we each had of G-O-R, then she put up two from each person, then she put up two more from each person.  Through a process of grouping and categorizing we came up with some of the most important elements of what a successful G-O-R could be.  Eventually a list was made with sub groups in each category.  Then the hard part was to find the people to actually take care of getting things done.

So far this is it:

  1. FOOD at first many thought that barbeque and pot luck was the way to go, since soliciting restaurants didn’t work last year.  Then the possibility of having commercially operated food carts was discussed and we decided that is the way to go.  No one volunteered to get more information about this but Pam has now said she will tackle it.  Gretchen will check out the NE 72nd and Fremont street faire this Saturday to see what food carts are there and see what might work for G-O-R.

  1. MUSIC Meara suggested Trash Can Joes, Clayton suggested Whiskey Boys Jazz , others said dancing sounds good.  More research is needed.

  1. ACTIVITIES & KIDS This is a broad category including a parade, costumed pets, a public sculpture built that day,  a bounce house (already donated by a Broadway business) Gulch Olympics, chalk art contest, ping pong and award ceremony.  Guy and Gretchen will work on this, but need more people involved.  Betse was volunteered to help with the parade, without her attendance (!) Gretchen will definitely handle the ping pong.

  1. OUTREACH This could be information about neighborhood resources, some school involvement, volunteer opportunities, getting feedback from attendees.  John Taylor said he would be helping with this.  BUT again, more people are needed.

Meara was voted the Captain of the whole event-she knows about insurance, porta potties, street closure, etc.  Adam agreed to be her lieutenant.  Joyce

Said she is good at making phone calls and will help with that.  She also said in the past it has been enjoyable to have long tables for people to sit and meet and talk, so a quiet area is a good idea too.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:  Tuesday July 15th   at 7:30 pm

                      MEET AT MEARA’S HOUSE

2332 NE Wasco to further these plans, we need more people involved for all this to happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
