Sullivan's Gulch Trail ~ An East-West Path through the Heart of Portland ~ This proposed 4.3 mile trail will stretch from the Eastbank Esplanade at the Willamette River through the historic transportation corridor of Sullivan's Gulch., connecting with the I-205 bike trail and Springwater corridor at Gateway. The off-road bicycle and pedestrian trail would parallel I-84 on the north side, with the potential to become an essential component of the region's transportation system and to serve thousands of east-side city commuters and recreational users. Within Sullivan's Gulch, access to the trail is envisioned at at 12th Ave, 21st Ave, and 28th Ave (to serve the Albina development and Fred Meyer area). What's the Status of the Trail? METRO has previously included the project in its Regional Trails and Greenway System plan, Portland Parks and Recreation has included it in its 2020 Vision Plan, and it is identified on the PDOT Bycycle Master Plan. A 2003 study done by Portland State University graduate students reported that there are 17 existing bridges that could connect the south side of the corridor to the trail and there are approximately 50 access points on the north side. Presentations were held in May and June with many of the neighborhoods that abutt the trail to develop support, as well as meetings with various METRO and Portland City officials. What is Needed Now? We welcome the participation of other neighborhood leaders on this committee, and especially need assistance in thte form of letters of support for this project. The timely support of neighborhoods that will benefit from the project is critical to move the project forward. Please contact Dan Lerch-Walters to learn more about the project. Committee Members
