If you live in the neighborhood, own property in
the neighborhood, or have a business in the neighborhood, come to the
Fall General Meeting. Learn about neighborhood “happenin’s” and meet your
neighbors. The meeting is open to all – this includes renters. We need everyone’s thoughts, ideas, and opinions and the only
way to get those is to have a diverse group!
The Fall General Meeting’s Guest Speaker:
Gil Kelley, Executive Director of Portland’s Bureau of Planning
I
moved from the suburbs to the neighborhood for a reason – it is more
livable. I can walk to the Irvington Market, Abe’s Dry Cleaning, Trade
Roots, Pizza Luna, Broadway Books…even the Lloyd Center. Our neighbors
have a variety of backgrounds and ages. Guess what created this environment
– a great mix. The best way to achieve this mix is through planning
and land use. A good mix of retail, single family homes, affordable
apartments, duplexes, high density high rises, and high-end row houses.
City planning, good development, and proper zoning made it happen. Gil
Kelley is the Executive Director or Portland’s Bureau of Planning, the
agency responsible for planning where density should go, zoning property,
and making the rules about subdividing land and what can be built in
what zone. He will talk about Portland, planning, and will answer
any questions that you have.
The August
dedication of Holladay Park “Our Park” went smoothly.
Many people visited our Sullivan’s Gulch Neighborhood blue tent
booth and enjoyed our informational handouts and the historical pictures
of the Gulch and the Sullivan’s Gulch Neighborhood.
The dignitaries’ ribbon cutting and speeches were short and to
the point. The chocolate
chip cookies from Lloyd Center Doubletree Hotel were delicious and the
new fountain “turn-on” was exciting.
Carolyn Bax and her gardener statue brought lots of questions and
compliments. Everyone liked the “In Touch”
band’s jazzy and pop music, but above all, The Fountain with its many
faceted turns and twists and varied heights was the hit of the afternoon.
The children loved it and keep playing in it daily, joined regularly
by adults.
The park is
beautiful with its formal flowerbeds and designed areas, so plan to use
it daily, or as part of your evening stroll.
Gay Greger, of the City’s Parks Department, who supervised the
event, thanks the SGNA for it “wonderful and helpful role in the Park’s
dedication.”
Third
Annual Party attracts
an estimated crowd of 340
By

It was a perfect
night in August. A breeze
to cools us, and music to soothe us.
Neighbors to meet, and a table of food that couldn't be beat.
SGNA would like to thank everyone who attended and participated
in the third annual National Night Out Block Party.
Approximately 340 residents joined together and celebrated our
neighborhood. We gave voice
to some of our local talent, and what a voice it was.
We were entertained for four hours by a truly eclectic mix.
We started out with Scandinavian music by Darren Knittle and his
band. Then Garet Saki provided
contemporary Hawaiian melodies.
D.J. Scarface played old blues and reggae, and, for a closure,
great cover songs by No Left Turn made us all get up and dance.
Sullivan's
Gulch is unique in its mix of residents and businesses in and around the
neighborhood. We are truly
thankful for the past and future support and generosity of the businesses
in assisting with community events.
Supporting merchants for the block party included Franz Bakery,
Helen Bernhart's Bakery, Grand Central Bakery and Cafe, Pepsi, Safeway,
The Cheshire Cat, and Trader Joe's.
Take some time this fall and rediscover our local businesses.
SGNA would
also like to thank the residents
who helped with the setup, cleanup and the messy job of cooking all those
burgers, hot dogs and Garden burgers.
A special thanks to Russell Eng for the use of his sound system,
Darren Knittle for going above and beyond the call of duty, and, Grace
Memorial Church for the use of the tables and chairs.
We could not have had such a successful event without your continued
involvement.
Thanks to all!!!
If you missed this event,
don't worry: we'll be back next year!
