TWO IMPORTANT MEETINGS COMING UP

----------

SPRING GENERAL MEETING - 5/29

On Thursday May 29 the Sullivan's Gulch Neighborhood Association holds its spring General Meeting. Mel Huie from Metro's staff and Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder will tell us about the proposed Sullivan's Gulch trail.

This topic is of particular importance as we have just received a grant (see below) which will include a study of circulation issues in the vicinity of the newly rezoned Albina Fuel site. As the proposed trail runs along that site, its feasibility has been specifically mentioned in the scope of the grant. During the course of discussions around the Albina zone change many people brightened up at the thought that new development and the trail might some day be linked.

Also on the agenda are election of SGNA Board members, and committee reports on other neighborhood issues.

The meeting will be at Grace Memorial Church; off NE Weidler between 16th and 17th. We'll begin at 7:00 with neighborhood business, and should be ready for the main event by 7:30.

PUBLIC KICKOFF MEETING FOR
ALBINA FUEL SITE and BROADWAY MAIN STREET
PLANNING STUDY

Sullivan's Gulch just received a grant to study planning and development options related to the Albina Fuel Co. site and NE Broadway Street. The project, funded by the state's Transportation and Growth Management program, offers a chance for community members to lay out a vision for the site and its vicinity that will help achieve neighborhod goals. The firm of Crandall Arambula PC has been engaged to conduct this study, and will bring in additional economic and transportation consultants.

Sullivan's Gulch NA applied for this grant as we were responding to the Albina Fuel Co. site rezoning. That process, which was focused only on one site, did not permit the broader look required to integrate the site into an area that is already fragmented. Because of the site's prominence and strategic location we wanted to determine if there are opportunities to better capture the assets of this area while maintaining or enhancing its livability. Surrounding neighorhoods will be joining us in this process.

At the first public meeting you will meet the consultants and identify the study area opportunities and constraints with background information on current economic and transportation conditions.

  • Join your neighbors in identifying issues to be included in the study.
  • Can Broadway become a "Main Street" and what does this mean; what is our vision?
  • What does this mean for traffic on Broadway and through the area? Is there a role for the Sullivan's Gulch Trail, a new MAX stop, eastside street car?

The Kickoff Meeting will be held on June 5 at 7:00 at Grace Memorial Church, off NE Weidler between 16th and 17th.
