NEWS & EVENTS

HEADQUARTERS HOTEL PRESENTATION TO NEIGHBORHOOD
At the next Sullivan's Gulch Neighborhood Association (SGNA) Board Meeting, Mr. Michael McElwee of the Portland Development Commission (PDC) will present the Oregon Convention Center Headquarters Hotel project. In recent years, SGNA representatives have worked closely with PDC on proposed projects in the Lloyd District and Rose Quarter. If you want to know more or have questions, we hope to see you there.

The presentation is scheduled at 8:30 pm (the latter half of the meeting). The entire meeting, which begins at 7:30 pm, is open to the public, and all Sullivan's Gulch neighbors are invited (and encouraged) to attend. The SGNA Board Meeting will be Tuesday, May 10 at Holladay Park Plaza, 1300 NE 16th Avenue, at Clackamas Street.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN UP AND GARDEN EXTRAVAGANZA
Thanks from all those who took advantage of the neighborhood cleanup and garden extravaganza events last month. Thanks to Christopher Salih and others for "manning" the dumpsters, which took away lots of useless stuff and yard debris, as well as a several pickup loads of metal and carload of white styrofoam for recycling. And if you missed the garden extravaganza, you'll have more chances later in the year for other get togethers. Thanks to Meara McLaughlin and her hearty band of gardeners for a wonderful afternoon of garden sociability; to Holladay Park Plaza for the use of their beautiful courtyard, to DaCapo Renaissance Quartet for a lovely serenade; to Harrison Pettit for wonderful garden furniture and to mother nature for not pouring rain on our events!

NEW BUSINESSES ON BROADWAY
Two new businesses have opened up at 1914-1916 NE Broadway — Sofa Table Chair, a furniture store naturally, and Mimi and Lena's womens' clothing have already opened and Ella Posey, feminine gifts will open soon. Stop by and say hello and welcome them to the neighborhood.

IRVINGTON HOME TOUR
The 23rd annual Historic Irvington Home Tour will be held next Sunday, May 15 from 11 am to 5 pm. It's the oldest and largest home tour in Portland and offers a chance to visit 10 beautifully-preserved and updated homes in the area - including two mansions (now bed and breakfasts. You must have a ticket in order to know where the homes are. They're $20 per person, $15 for seniors over 65 and no children under 7 except infants in front packs. You can buy tickets from Broadway Books (1714 NE Broadway), New Seasons or Caffe Destino (14th & Fremont) or online at
www.irvingtonhometour.com.

THINK LOCAL FIRST
It is not always possible to buy everything you need from locally-owned businesses, but if everyone purchased one more item locally when they shopped, the effects would be tremendous. Locally-owned businesses:

• Spend more money at other local businesses helping the local economy grow through the “multiplier effect” - rather than this money “leaking out” through remote corporate headquarters and centralized purchasing departments
• Pay more in local and state taxes than outside corporations
• Make up the largest employer category, nationally and locally
• Give better customer service overall
• Have owners that live in the communities they do business in and are free to make decisions based on local needs
• Require less public investment than large employers seeking tax breaks or special zoning consideration.

Neighborhood businesses that are members of the Local First organization include: Broadway Books, Hugo's Cafe, Broadway Floral & Greenhouse, Colosso Restaurant, Kitchen Kaboodle. For a complete list of businesses, membership information and other resources, see their web site at: www.thinklocalportland.org
