Three Gulch students win prestigious awards

Kasseem Osheroff, star of the Grant Generals football team and son of Gulch resident Sara Osheroff, was awarded a full athletic scholarship to play for the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks.  At Grant Kasseem played running back, defensive backfield, and punter.  At Northern Arizona Kasseem expects to specialize in defense, probably as a safety.  He had an outstanding game in the Oregon High School All-Star North-South game, in which he started at linebacker. We’re all Lumberjacks in the Gulch now!

Kassel Galaty, an incoming junior at the Oregon Episcopal School and daughter of Gulch residents Deb and Dave Galaty, was awarded a young scholars grant by the Oregon Council for the Humanities.  These $2,000 grants are awarded to 12 high school students in Oregon who agree to complete a research project over the summer.  Kassel will be reading post-World War II German novels to see how German writers dealt with the specter of the holocaust.

Sebastian Simek, son of Stepan Simek and Esther Saulle, is touring Taiwan and Korea with the Portland Youth Philharmonic this summer. Founded in 1924, PYP is the oldest youth orchestra in the U.S. Sebastian, who plays the viola, is one of 81 musicians on the tour which features 6 concerts in 4 cities over 19 days.  You can read about the trip on the PYP’s daily trip log at pportlandyouthphil.org/tour/daily_log.php. Sebastian’s trip was made possible in part through generous donations from Sullivan’s Gulch residents. Thanks neighbors!

Urban Crossroads Gains Development Commission Approval

Redevelopment of the former Albina Fuel Co. property gained approval of the Portland Design Review Commission this month. It has been a long process (beginning in the summer of '00) from zone changes to final design approval.  (See complete history).

Urban Crossroads was among the single largest projects ever to be reviewed by the Design Commission---five sessions were required before the Commission would sign off on plans for this critical site.  The development team was working within a very narrow "development envelope" based on terms from the zone change that required the minimum number of housing units also be the maximum.

The Commission recognized the "gateway" nature of this site---leading to at least three neighborhoods.  The "rotunda" at NE Broadway and 33rd is intended to mark this important intersection.

Sullivan's Gulch Trail gaining Momentum
Interest in the proposed Sullivan's Gulch trail is growing, following a series of presentations to communities along the trail, and meetings with local government officials.

A Sullivan's Gulch/Irvington steering committee is coordinating this effort, which envisions a 4.3 mile trail and greenway corridor for bicycles and pedistrians from the Willamette River to I-205 at Gateway.

The next step is to secure funding for an engineering study.

On our website you will find a complete PowerPoint Presentation of the trail, showing where it might go, the access points, and other information.  There is also a pdf Brochure for you to see and download.  Click on the "More Information" link below for all of this.

Neighbors Acting to take Ownership at 1620 NE Broadway

Recognizing the important asset those of us in Sullivan’s Gulch and Irvington have in our local business district, a group of neighbors is taking action to protect and enhance its future.

For more than a year the developer of 1620 Broadway searched for a grocery store to replace Zupans as the first floor tenant.  When we learned that a national pet supply store was ready to sign a lease for the site we prepared a resolution for the SGNA Board stating that such a business was not in the interest of our neighborhoods.  The pet store decided not to lease.

Not wanting to wait any longer, a group of neighbors is now working to buy a portion of the space and establish a Community Market on Broadway.   The plan is to lease the space to a business or businesses that meet local criteria.  Money for the investment will be raised by selling shares to individuals in the community.  A letter of interest has been drafted and already several have been returned. To date, over $1 million has been identified.

The group is being led by Rick Gustafson, president of the condo association, with substantial assistance from Dick Levy.  Dick has located a major investor who is interested.  Both have met with the developer Alan Kravitz to begin negotiations and will be making an offer.

While major investors are key to securing funds, the goal is to enlist at least 500 individuals or families who will invest.  Such an investment at $1000 per share underlines a broad commitment to our community ---and should ensure customers for our merchants.  Those who are unable to invest at this time can lend their verbal support.  All is important.

There will be a informational and brainstorming session on Saturday, June 17th at 11 o’clock at Rick and Susan Gustafson's condo at 1620 Broadway. Interested persons are welcome to join in.For more information about the project and to receive a copy of the letter of interest, please contact Rick at GUSFAM@aol.com

Note:  The SGNA has not endorsed or taken any position on this matter.
